The Journey, By Mary Oliver

CATEGORIES: Personal

This poem was shared with me by my dear friend and coach, Meadow Devor.  I have experienced the heaviest moments of my life ever in recent days, and she shared this with me on one particularly hard day.  Don’t worry … I’m not dying, but part of me feels as if it is.  But with death, comes rebirth;  “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord…”

Today, my dear friend marries her best friend.  To have watched her life come full circle over the last 5 years is something I can only wish for my life in the next 5 years.  Meadow, you are an incredible woman, a true inspiration and a sweet voice which I know God sent into my life.  I love you and wish you a lifetime of joy with Tommy.  xoxo  allyson

The Journey One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice—
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
determined to save
the only life you could save.
