Sometimes you just need to see yourself differently.

Not a younger version of yourself.
Not the version you were 10 years ago.

THIS version.

The woman who has lived a little.
Learned a lot.
Changed.
Grown.

And become more fully herself along the way.

That was the heart behind Gloria’s session. She wanted to celebrate who she is now—and create images that felt like her, not some version of who she thought she was supposed to be.

So we played.

We created dramatic black-and-white portraits. We made a little magic with that incredible headpiece - she hand crafted.

We brought out her strength, her softness, her confidence and her personality.

And then she left the studio looking absolutely gorgeous…

and drove straight to the DMV to get a new California driver’s license photo. 😂

Because why shouldn't your driver's license photo be fabulous too?

But that's what I love about these sessions. They're not about having your picture taken.

They're about taking a moment to say:

This is me.
This is who I've become.
And I like her.

You don't need a birthday, a promotion, a divorce, a weight loss, a new career or some other milestone to give yourself permission to celebrate.

You can simply decide that this version of you is worth documenting.

And she IS

She didn't come to me just for headshots.

She came to document the woman who was still here.

Rhonda is one of my hair and makeup artists, so I've had the privilege of knowing her for years. @rhondajohnsonmuandh

When she booked her session, she had two very different things she wanted to capture.

She needed fresh images for her business.

But she also wanted to document something much more personal: the experience of having open-heart surgery to save her life after discovering a genetic condition.

And that changed the way I thought about this session.

Because sometimes a portrait isn't just about how you look.

Sometimes it's a marker in time.

This is me now.

This is the body that carried me through something enormous.

This is the woman I became.

This is the face my people know and love.

This is the version of me I don't want to forget.

And then we made beautiful photographs of the woman who is very much still living her life — laughing, working, getting dressed up, showing up for her business and looking completely, unmistakably herself.

I think that's one of the most meaningful things about photographing women in this season of life.

You don't need to wait until you've accomplished something else.

You don't need to be a different size.

You don't need a milestone that makes it "okay" to have beautiful photographs of yourself.

You are already living a story worth remembering.

Sometimes you just need to stop long enough to document it.

If you've been thinking about having a portrait session but keep telling yourself "someday," maybe this is your sign that someday doesn't have to be a prerequisite for being seen.
